Yunan Naufalia Hanantio
English ⇄ Indonesian translator · Jakarta
I translate customs, trade, tax, legal, and business documents between English and Indonesian, with a focus on getting the terminology right without making the text unnecessarily complicated. (I mean, reading formal documents is complicated enough already, duh.) my job is to make sure the translation doesn't make it any harder.
for more than eight years, I've worked with regulatory and technical language in customs and international trade in both languages. my work has covered regulations, trade agreements, technical reports, and day-to-day correspondence. so, I know how these terms are actually used in practice, which isn't always what the dictionary (or your AI) says.
I also lead quality review of AI-generated content for a European IT company, where I check whether the output is factually sound, consistent, and actually reads like something a person would write.
ultimately, I bring two things to every translation: the subject knowledge to understand what's being said and the editorial eye to make sure it's communicated properly.
customs & trade
customs valuation, tariff classification, rules of origin, trade agreements and import/export documents.

Customs Valuation Regulation · ID → EN
My own translation of Indonesia's Regulation Number 144/PMK.04/2022 on Customs Value for the Calculation of Import Duty, with 38 translator's notes. Here are four excerpts from it.
Translator's note “Nilai pabean” is rendered “customs value,” following Article 15.1(a) of the WTO Customs Valuation Agreement (CVA). The term isn’t defined in Article 1 of the regulation and is written in lowercase throughout.
Translator's note “Daerah Pabean” is rendered “Customs Territory,” following CVA usage.
Translator's note The literal wording doesn’t make clear whose shares are held. The English follows Article 15.4(d) of the CVA (“any person … of both of them”) for the ownership test, but keeps the Indonesian text’s “shares” where the CVA says “voting stock or shares.”
Translator's note “Pemilik Barang” is a domestic defined term with no CVA equivalent, so it’s rendered descriptively.
Sustainability Report · ID → EN
A self-initiated translation of the President Director's message in AIA Indonesia's 2024 sustainability report, with 23 translator's notes. It wasn't commissioned by AIA, and I'm not affiliated with the company. Here are four short extracts.
Translator's note “Nilai pertanggungan” is “sum assured,” the standard life insurance term. English number conventions apply throughout, so “Rp” becomes IDR.
Translator's note This is the plan financial services institutions submit to OJK under POJK No. 51/POJK.03/2017. I kept the Indonesian acronym because it names a regulatory filing.
Translator's note This is the standard English title. The source spells it “Perlindungan,” while the statute’s own title uses “Pelindungan.” The English is unaffected.
Translator's note Indonesian companies have a two-tier board: the Direksi (executive management) is separate from the Dewan Komisaris (the supervisory Board of Commissioners).
AI Response Review · Demo
A made-up demo of how I review AI output: check the facts, fix the language, and explain every change. I wrote this task for this page, so it isn't taken from any real project.
- Western Indonesia Time (WIB): UTC+7
- Central Indonesia Time (WITA): UTC+8
- Eastern Indonesia Time (WIT): UTC+9
- Style Cut the filler opener. It adds nothing and delays the answer.
- Grammar The subject is singular: “Indonesia has.”
- Accuracy WIT is UTC+9, not UTC+10.
- Accuracy Bali uses WITA, so it’s one hour ahead of Jakarta. This was half of the question.
- Style Cut the closing question. The answer is complete without it.
every translator has a trash folder. these literal translations never got past me.
